Ras na mBan
Stage 2
Moll's Gap is not the only significant climb in the Ring of Kerry. Today's stage went up the Letterkenny pass. At 6km long, this narrow, winding, gravel-strewn climb was tackled four times over the 60km stage.
As the gradient gradually sapped the strength from the riders' legs, the lead group was rapidly whittled down to the remaining 17, who would contest the final 17km lap.
Squadra Donne were again well-represented in this elite leading group with Iona, Stephania and Naomi working well to maintain their overall and team positions.
Sarah lost contact with the main bunch towards the top of the climb on lap 2. Despite sprinting to catch the bunch, she was unable to hang on. On the final lap, she broke away from the group with which she was riding, sprinting the final 5 miles and gaining 40 valuable seconds.
The exertions of the previous day proved too much for Vicky, who had to contend the lower placings.
Results:
8 Iona
18 Naomi
19 Steph
34 Sarah
45 Vicky
Stage 3
After a brief rest, the unique 2km, downhill time trial completed the day's racing.
16 seconds covered the team's placings!
General Classification after stage 3:
12 Iona
17 Naomi
18 Steph
33 Sarah
39 Vicky
Squadra Donne is currently 4th in the team standings.
